Philly-based quartet Pissed Jeans have never stopped being the smartest punk band committed to convincing everyone they’re not. Vocalist Matt Korvette barks and howls about boring girls and libidos until you realize he’s carefully dissecting gender dynamics with each sweaty word bullet. Fifth album Why Love Now brings that insight to a new, barbed apex, lampooning white male privilege in “The Bar Is Low” and apathetic misogyny in “Ignorecam.” It funnels the ragged chaos of 2013’s Honeys into a husky, serrated collection of missives that also sound fantastic with a few beers at unhealthy volumes. The band traveled west for a searing set at Chicago’s Empty Bottle, currently celebrating its 25th anniversary. Photographer Sarah Hess dodged beer fountains from drummer Sean McGuinness to bring you the gallery above. Pissed Jeans plays its hometown in July.
