Sara Evans has spent the last two decades generating country hits, releasing a total of nine albums with songs climbing up Billboard’s Hot Country Songs and crossing over into the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Even if you’re not usually a country listener, chances are you’ve heard her track “A Little Bit Stronger,” which Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester covered in the Gwyneth Paltrow film Country Strong.
For Evans, making music is a family affair. Her younger sister, Lesley, performs background vocals in the studio and on tour with her. Her sister Ashley and her daughter Olivia also sang on Evans’ latest album, Words, while her brother Matt plays guitar in her band. She and her bandmates stopped by Paste Studios last week to perform several tracks off of Words, including the first single, “Marquee Sign.”
“Marquee Sign” is inspired by a conversation Evans had with her co-writers about how it would be nice if people came with a label warning you about their toxic traits and flaws. It has the makings of a country smash: a catchy chorus, tight harmonies and a message that anyone who has ever allowed themselves to be vulnerable and paid the price can relate to.
