Back in July, SOAK (aka Bridie Monds-Watson) followed up her sophomore full-length, Grim Town, with a cover of Sleater-Kinney’s “Modern Girl” for Amazon Music. Now the Irish singer-songwriter is back to put her spin on another one of the greats (and one of Paste’s best songs of the decade): The National’s “Bloodbuzz Ohio.”
“Matt Berninger is one of my favorite lyricists,” said Monds-Watson in a statement. “There’s something so special about the imagery The National manages to create within their music and I often catch myself imagining each song as its own movie trailer. I love the manic world this song creates.” SOAK’s rendition is definitely as far from manic as it gets—its paring-down of the song’s bombast and mystique to soft guitar and reedy vocals approaches twee.
