Though the days of sensational plot reveals and mega-size font word bubbles may be a trend of the Silver Age past, comic covers still provide an enticing glimpse into the interior style and substance of the books they advertise. The best examples manipulate design, color, dimension, and typography into a visual hook that can’t help but be explored further. Here are Paste’s favorite comic covers from July.
Also worth noting: Jae Lee’s art on and in Batman/Superman #2 is simply breathtaking. Along with colorist June Chung, Lee contrasts the radiant optimism of Superman with the gothic undertones of Batman through gorgeous, minimalist layouts that feel equally alien and classic. It’s an optical delight that should be read then framed.
