The Radio Dept. has been filling our ears with pop that bounces, builds and drones since the early 2000s, flitting through a array of synth, shoegaze and new wave. Last October, long-term members Johan Duncanson and Martin Larsson returned with Running Out of Love, their first new album since 2010 and a political statement against encroaching populism. While the album isn’t afraid to embrace the band’s legacy of satin keyboard textures and Duncanson’s voice remains as pacifying as it was a decade and a half ago, the LP packs an aggressive subtext (listen to the pounding backdrop of “Swedish Guns”). The group has filtered its dynamic history nicely on the stage, and closed out its American tour last week at The Music Hall of Williamsburg. Paste photographer Drew Reynolds spent some time with the band before its sold-out show and also captured the group’s hypnotic performance, bathed in orange, purple and red lights.
