Janelle Monáe to Lead Homecoming Season Two for Amazon

Musician and actress Janelle Monáe is set to lead the cast of season two of Amazon’s Homecoming, per Variety.

Monáe’s character is still quite ambiguous, but is currently being described as a woman who seemingly has no memory of who she is after she finds herself floating in a canoe with no recollection of how she got there.

Monáe is leading the Season Two cast after Julia Roberts’ starred in the lead role of Heidi Bergman in the first season. The role was Roberts’ first as a TV series regular, and the same will be true of Monáe. Other than Roberts, the first season starred Bobby Cannavale, Stephan James, Sissy Spacek, Shea Whigham and Ayden Mayeri, among many others.

The psychological drama is based on the fictional podcast of the same name from Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg. Though Roberts is not starring in the new season, she’s still oboard to executive produce under her Red Om Films banner. Alongside Roberts, Mr. Robot’s Sam Esmail and Chad Hamilton will executive produce. Both Horowitz and Bloomberg will executive produce for Gimlet Media with Chris Giliberti, Alex Blumberg and Matt Lieber.

Other than Homecoming, Monáe is set to star in the Harriet Tubman biopic Harriet, and she’ll lend her voice to the re-imagining of Disney’s Lady and the Tramp. She made her feature film debut in Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight, and has otherwise starred in Hidden Figures, Welcome to Marwen and voice-acted in the animated UglyDolls.
