It’s back to school, boys and girls. But just because it’s every grade schooler’s least favorite time of the year doesn’t mean the Hulu train stops. So, full steam ahead. We have a lot to get through.
Most of us are aware the Harvey Weinstein scandal was the infamous impetus for the depressingly all-too-relevant Me Too movement. Director Ursula Macfarlane’s documentary, Untouchable, goes beyond the headlines, and chronicles the rise and fall of one of Hollywood’s most powerful monsters. Macfarlane’s doc—out Sept. 2—also examines the lasting impact Weinstein’s alleged abuses left on his victims professionally, physically and emotionally. Meanwhile, the fires in the Amazon rainforest are currently seared into the public mind—it’s the perfect time to watch a gorgeous, environmentally friendly cartoon, really. Ferngully: The Last Rainforest is what happens when filmmakers blend Robin Williams, green messages and early ‘90s cliches—a goofy rap, anyone? Check it out Sept. 1. Moving on, American Horror Story: Apocalypse arrives Sept. 24, bringing its not-all-that-scary convoluted plots and camp dialogue with it. Critics called the eighth anthology in the series a return to form, working in a crossover between Murder House and Coven in a Ryan Murphy smorgasbord. Might be time to return if you checked out three seasons ago. News that a fourth film in the Wachowski’s The Matrix series has sci-fi fans abuzz this week. Wouldn’t you know it, the original trilogy appears Sept. 1 to remind us all bullet time is still cool, and Keanu Reeves has always been awesome. Rounding out the rest of the month are the 17th season of NBC’s vocal talent show The Voice (Sept. 24), the bawdy return of the long-running South Park (Sept. 26) and The Good Place’s fourth season premiere on Sept. 27. If you’re not watching one of TV’s cleverest and most sidesplitting shows, start immediately.
Those with HBO subscriptions can catch 2018’s bizarre twist on the “living toys” plot, Welcome to Marwen Sept. 14. Hey, keep the toys theme going with The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part and enjoy Will Arnett’s gruff-voiced Batman once more. Signed up for Starz instead? Have a good cry with Spielberg’s masterful 1982 classic E.T. the Extraterrestrial Sept. 1. Paul Verhoeven’s camp masterpiece Showgirls provides a more adult alternative Sept. 1, if that’s your game. Freddy vs. Jason pits two horror icons against one another, and the trippy Vanilla Sky pits Tom Cruise against a (terrifying) Cameron Diaz, both arriving Sept. 13. And you weirdos with SHOWTIME aren’t getting much this month, but true-crime fanatics who have already breezed through Mindhunter’s second season should give a shot. The channel’s first docuseries investigates the unsolved murders of eight women whose bodies were discovered between 2005 and 2009 in and around the town of Jennings, Louisiana.
