As first reported by TV Line, TBS has placed a pilot order for a Lena Waithe comedy titled Twenties.
The single-camera comedy is the brainchild of the Master of None breakout star. Written in Waithe’s early twenties, the comedy follows the lives of a black lesbian named Hattie and her two straight friends, Marie and Nia, as they “spend most of their days talking s-t and chasing their dreams,” per the show’s official logline. Along with creating and writing the project, Waithe will serve as an executive producer.
“I always wanted to tell a story where the queer black woman was the protagonist,” Waithe said of the pilot order. “Queer black characters have been the sidekick for long enough, it’s time for us to finally take the lead.”
Along with this new comedy, Waithe will continue to star in and write on Master of None while serving as the creator and executive producer of Showtime’s new hit drama The Chi, which will air its season one finale next month. The show was picked up for a second season in late January.
Waithe seems to be carving out a nice niche for herself in an age of black excellence.
