Earlier today, we told you everything that’s coming to Netflix and Amazon in December. Now, it’s Hulu’s turn. With an extensive list of new shows and movies coming in the final month of 2015, along with original content, the network-backed service continues to make a serious run at Netflix for control of the streaming-verse. This month, Hulu boasts a Vietnam classic, an absurdist FX sitcom, an overlooked Christopher Nolan showstopper, and an entire horror franchise (of which the original remains the best). Check out our featured recommendations, and read on for the full list of this month’s new offerings.
Interstellar
Year: 2014
Director: Christopher Nolan
Available: Dec. 12
What deserves mention above all else is the efficacy of Nolan’s imagery and his (largely practical) FX work. We expect Nolan to trump all comers in both categories, and in Interstellar, his cinematic gifts are put to jaw-dropping use. Put simply, the film looks so incredible that if you’re not seeing it in the best format available to you, you’re doing yourself a disservice. This is a huge film, a colossal film, and it’s meant to be seen in a setting that honors its impressive scale.—Andy Crump
Friday the 13th
Year: 1980
Director: Sean S. Cunningham
Available: Dec. 1
Before the myriad laughable sequels, there was this legitimately freaky classic. It gave us post-coital violence, Kevin Bacon and Mrs. Vorhees, the best mascot of effed-up mother/son relationships since Psycho. Its legacy might be tarnished now, but this first flick’s last scene is still scary enough to keep us from ever setting foot in a canoe again…part of you might wish you’d partaken in the traditional summer camp activities as a youngster, but a look at Camp Crystal Lake could sway you—especially when Jason decides to wreak havoc with a machete on a group of vulnerable counselors at the camp nestled in the middle of the woods.—Paste
Man Seeking Woman: Season 1
Year: 2015
Creator: Simon Rich
Available: Dec. 7
Every surreal moment in FX’s Man Seeking Woman can be tied in to a very human emotion. The pain of being dumped is a lot like walking around on a sunny day with a funnel of rain falling on you, as happens to lead character Greenberg. The disheartening feeling of being set up with someone you don’t find attractive can feel like dining with a troll, and the bastard who horned in on your old flame might as well be Adolf Hitler. Played real, the feelings are heightened—but not changed—by the absurdities. If you identify with the emotional content, it doesn’t look very strange at all.—Shane Ryan
Apocalypse Now
Year: 1979
Director: Francis Ford Coppola
Available: Dec. 1
Francis Ford Coppola’s best film without the word “Godfather” in it was the result of two years in the jungle, which led to performances that captured mental breakdown in a way that felt all too real. The update to Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness was a different kind of war movie, one which captured the horror of war and the madness of Vietnam like no other before or since. —Josh Jackson
