Earlier, we showed you the all the good stuff that’s coming to Netflix in November (and also, sad face, everything that’s leaving), and now it’s time to turn our attention to Hulu.
The up-and-coming streaming service has a motherlode of new TV shows and movies coming in, including: A whole heaping pile of James Bond films, a Wes Anderson classic, Jack Black’s best dramatic performance, and a Julian Assange biopic. Check out our featured recommendations, and read on for the full list of this month’s new offerings—note that some of the films are only available with a Showtime Premium add-on.
The Fifth Estate
Year: 2013
Director: Bill Condon
Available: Nov. 1
It is difficult not to bring preformed opinions about the Julian Assange story to this film. His is a compelling narrative: the man who made it his mission to bring truth to the world plagued by secrets of his own. Benedict Cumberbatch gives an outstanding performance as the WikiLeaks founder..,There are some lovely details to his acting: the constant touching of his face and hair and his nervy, fidgeting posture gesture towards his character’s obvious social difficulties…as they begin to realize the potential human cost of their actions, Assange becomes increasingly erratic and unyielding. —Megan Girdwood
Rushmore
Year: 1998
Director: Wes Anderson
Available: Nov. 1
Max Fischer is one of the greatest and most original characters of the 1990s (who else could have saved Latin?), and Rushmore remains our favorite Wes Anderson film. But if the film introduced Jason Schwartzman, it also served as the pivot in Bill Murray’s career from broad comic to art-house juggernaut (Garfield movies excepted). Few films remain rewatchable into the double digits, but this one just keeps getting funnier. —Josh Jackson
Bernie
Year: 2012
Director: Richard Linklater
Available: Nov. 1
Bernie is as much about the town of Carthage, Texas, as it is about its infamous resident Bernie Tiede (Jack Black), the town’s mortician and prime suspect in the murder of one of the its most despised citizens, Marjorie Nugent (Shirley MacLaine). Unlike Nugent, Bernie is conspicuously loved by all. When he’s not helping direct the high school musical, he’s teaching Sunday school…With Bernie,, Linklater once again has proven himself a fearless director who is neither complacent nor formulaic. —Tim Basham
