FX has released a rather gratuitous trailer for its upcoming show Taboo.

The eight-episode series, which stars Mad Max: Fury Road star Tom Hardy, hails from Ridley Scott and Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders). Knight created the series, which was based on an original story by Hardy and his father, Chips Hardy. FX picked up the show back in November of 2014.

Taboo is a darkly intense period drama set in 1813, following the rogue adventurer Keziah Delaney (Hardy) who has returned from Africa bearing 14 ill-gotten diamonds. Delaney, driven by a need for vengeance over the death of his father, has refused to sell his family’s business to the East India Company, putting a target on his back. Setting out to build his own trade and shipping empire, Delany finds himself in the middle of a very deadly game

If bloody and brutal aren’t your thing, this series is probably not for you. Otherwise, the Taboo trailer offers a solid tease of what will more than likely be a compelling thrill-ride through the dirty and dangerous political underground of 17th century England.
