The Umbrella Academy Renewed for a Second Season

Our favorite dysfunctional superhero family is coming back for a second season on Netflix. The streaming giant has renewed The Umbrella Academy, based on the Eisner Award-winning comic book of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, for 10 more one-hour episodes. Just a heads up: there are spoilers below. You have been warned.

Production kicks off this summer in Toronto, Canada, with all seven of the Hargreeves reprising their roles: Ellen Page as the all-powerful Vanya, Tom Hopper as gentle-hearted Luther, David Castañeda as the hot-tempered Diego, Emmy Raver-Lampman as the well-meaning manipulator Allison, Robert Sheehan as the tortured and never-sober Klaus, Aidan Gallagher as the weathered Number Five and Justin Min as Ben, who is dead.

The casting at least gives us some answers to the cliffhanger ending of the first season, in which the Hargreeves jump back in time in order to avoid the apocalypse. Their reversion to teenager-dom must be temporary if the main cast is returning to the small screen.

As for the behind-the-scenes team, Steve Blackman is back as showrunner and executive producer for The Umbrella Academy. Jeff F. King, Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg, Way and Bá are also returning as executive producers. The Umbrella Academy will be produced by Universal Content Productions for Netflix.

We’ve a while yet until the second season, so in the meantime, deep-dive on the series in these Paste TV features on how the show squanders its most important influence and how it also shows a new future for Netflix.
