True Detective Season Three is in The Works

After a fantastic first season and a less-than-successful (much, much less than successful) second season, HBO’s True Detective seemed poised to fade away completely. But with new reporting from EW, it appears True Detective will not go quietly into that good night … not yet, at least.

According to EW, show creator Nic Pizzolatto has written at least two episodes for a potential third season. Pizzolatto has also tapped Emmy-winning writer-producer David Milch (Deadwood, NYPD Blue) to collaborate. The details surrounding their collaboration are unclear at this point, but it seems likely that Milch would serve as a writer, rather than a showrunner.

It’s important to note that the third season has not officially been green-lit by HBO yet. However, the powerful Pizzolatto/Milch duo would suggest that the True Detective team will definitely be making a bid for a third season revival, and as EW points out, HBO programming head Casey Bloys did say last summer that they’re “open to another season.”

After the disappointing second season, they’ll have a lot to prove—perhaps it’s time to bring back Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelsen, the dynamic pairing that hooked us in the first place. McConaughey has repeatedly voiced that he’d be open to a return as Rust Cohle, and really, what do they have to lose?
